Hi,

Sorry to post here, but I'm having real issues, and I've spent days trying to figure out the problem myself.

I'm running Ubuntu 7.10, on 1.5ghz celeron M laptop that uses the RT2500 chipset for the built-in wireless. I've installed the latest nightly CVS of RT2500 from here, and followed numerous instructions from various sites, including the Ubuntu wiki on this. I've also installed RutilT. Basically I can see my network and detect it fine, but I can never connect to it, I just keep entering the passphrase and it repeatedly asks for it, and this doesn't matter if I enter the settings manually or select it from the network manager menu.

Also, things like ifconfig ra0 up show no such device, modprobe rt2500 shows nothing, but modprobe rt2500.pci works. Ive also tried editing the etc/network/interfaces file, but no luck there either.

Ive got ubuntu working fine on my desktop, so I'd really like it for the laptop too. If someone can suggest how I can fix this that would be great, however, I wouldn't mind if someone suggested another distro where this would work out of the box! Only really need it for internet and studying, openoffice basically.

I would be really grateful for any help, cheers,

Sam

What does 'lspci' report?
What does 'dmesg' report?

Did you enable debugging output? If not, please do so and report what debug messages have appeared.

Hiya,

Thanks for the quick reply, and sorry for the delayed one from me! Been really busy though.

Anyway, in regards to the lspci, the line about network interfaces reads 0005.0 Network controller RaLink RT2500 802.11g Cardbus/mini-PCI (rev 01)

'dmesg' reports a huge amount of stuff, I'll have to connect the laptop to the internet, but do you want it all? Also, if I try to enable debugging, modprobe rt2500 debug=1, results in FATAL Module rt2500 not found.

Cheers again,

Sam

modprobe rt2500 debug=1, results in FATAL Module rt2500 not found.

Well apparently the module wasn't named rt2500, but according to your first post rt2500.pci which is odd, but if you can do 'modprobe rt2500.pci' then enabling debug output would be 'modprobe rt2500.pci debug=31'

Ah, now both show fatal, not found

Then you should check if you actually installed the module...

Hey,

So I tried installing again via these instructions https//help.ubuntu.com/community/WifiD ... 500#brezzy.
(The compile newer driver part) and once I type make in the cd rt2500*/Module folder, it appears with
