commands hang after driver installed

ive downloaded and installed the latest rt2570 cvs driver (rt2570-cvs-2007122902 )
when I plug my Edimax USB stick in its recognised and the driver is loaded

but when I try to configure the card
(ifconfig/iwconfig) the terminal hangs
and Crtl-C doesnt get me out -so i cant configure the card !

Hello,
If you bring the interface up before issuing the commands, does that help?
