as I'm writing this, I'm using my rt73 based dongle. The sad news is
I'm on an unencrypted network, as I have to use this legacy driver.

rt73usb won't work. most of the time, it won't even find my AP
iwlist wlan0 scan
and if it does, the siganl quality is to bad to establish a connection.

just if you are curious

the system is x86-64. the dongle in question is a level one.

rt73 legacy is able to work at 36Mbps, which is good (My NB with bcm43xx only gets 24Mbps)

Are you able to post dumps of the debugfs register values in both legacy and rt73usb?

I've attached a script to do the dump, it needs to run as root and the path needs tweaking for the legacy driver. you also need to ensure you have built with debugfs enabled.

I will do this if it will help you, but as i said

it works with the latest river ;)

I'm writing this using rt2x00, wpa_supplicant and wpa2 psk!

I AM sure that it does work, cause my network cable is plugged to my notebook tight now (doing speed tests ...), so all internet trafic HAS to go over the air!

If you still nee that dumps, I'll make one.

a last thing

i noticed something odd when doing the speed test

a) desktop is using rt73usb
b) notebook is connected to the ap using wired ethernet
the ap is an netgear dg834pnb (airgo wlan)

the desktop runs sshd.

speedtest are performed on the NB using scp.

large file = 500 - 700 MB

test1 copy a large file from NB to Desktop
(this tests the downlink of the dongle)
scp some_large_file

results starts at 1.8MB/s, sometimes reaches 2MB/s, 1.9MB/s average.

test2 reverse direction (ie test the uplink of the dongle)

scp .

speed reaches 900K/s, but sometimes drops to 0!!!
while speed is null, i can still ping the NB from the Desktop ?!?

perhaps some ssh wiredness ?

I posted before seeing your it works post.

There have been changes to the antenna setup recently which do cause low signal level if they are wrong and there are so many combinations of antenna config the developers can't test them all.
