this is probably a dumb question, but i've seen that the rt2x00 also supports rt73 chipsets, despite the name. rt73 is what i have, so should i use the rt73 specific driver, or the rt2x00 driver?

If you use kernel 2.6.24 you can enable the rt2x00 driver inside that kernel. Otherwise it is easier for new users to use the legacy rt73 driver.
