Wireless on startup

Hi, I made a wireless wpa2-protected network at home, using a router linksys wrt54g, and rt61 wireless cards for each pc. In windows xp I applied a patch to use wpa2 and the 2 pcs that I have are connected to the network on startup, but when I use debian I have to login and use rutilt (which doesn't let me configure static ip) or wireless assistant (which doesn't seem to work with wpa2).

To do some testing I configured it in ubuntu livecd, and copied /etc/network/interfaces to the hard drive, but it didn't worked. This is

The output of 'dmesg' will contain rt2x00 messages, if rt2x00 was compiled with debugging enabled. Besides rt2x00 it is also usefull to compile mac80211 with debug enabled.

Well iwconfig shows a very low TX rate, that might be because the rate control algorithm or antenna setup aren't behaving nicely. Those issues are fixed with more recent (but unreleased) kernels.

If you compiled rt2x00 with debug disabled, then yes you need to recompile rt2x00 with debug enabled.

Odd, you seem to be associated frequently, but disconnected due to a weird problem where authentication messages are still being broadcasted by the AP.

I'm not sure what can cause this, I have googled a bit to find similar issues with other drivers, and none of those have been fixed either. So this is a bit of weird behavior...

I think I can shed a bit more light on what is happening but not why.

The PC attempts to authenticate and associate with the AP and believes it has. The AP isn't happy with the authentication and so generates a deauthentication message giving the reason it isn't happy as 15 which means 4-Way Handshake timeout. mac80211 therefore tries to re-authenticate and so the cycle repeats.

Are you able to try with a different AP or get any sort of logs from the AP?

Well if the AP doesn't agree with the authentication, then why does it respond to the association request?
The logs indicate successfull association before being kicked because of the authentication.

Unfortunately that I don't know. Reading the spec more carefully I think at least for 802.1X the handshake follows both auth and assoc which would explain why the deauth occurs after assoc but not give any clue as to what is wrong with it.

One question though, is wpa_supplicant running (if it isn't that probably explains things) and does the log for that say anything interesting?

No, rt2x00 uses mac80211 which in turn uses the proper wireless API for configuration. Which means that Wext is the proper module for wpa_supplicant.

The ralink module you mention is probably intended for the legacy drivers which don't follow the wireless API.
