Hi everybody,

I own a Conceptronic 54g Wireless PCI Card with a Ralink RT2561/RT61 rev.B chipset.

I need to switch it to master mode, but I have been unable to do so.
I have tried doing it using the kernel v.2.6.24, with v.2.6.27, with v.2.6.26 plus the patch that enables AP (I have read elsewhere in this forum that it should work), and finally with the v.2.6.28-rc5-wl that I have also downloaded here (from GIT).
I have enabled module rt61pci in the kernel and the card is correctly detected.
Moreover, I have enabled "nl80211 new netlink interface support" so the card is able to communicate with hostapd once I have switched it to master mode. Of course I have firmware v.1.2 in /lib/firmware (Gentoo).

Anyway, when I try to do

# iwconfig wlan0 mode master

I get a

# Error for wireless request "Set Mode" (8B06)
# SET failed on device wlan0 ; Invalid argument.

It is my undestanding that, altough it does not work perfectly, v.2.6.28-rc5-wl should support master mode, doesn´t it?
The truth is I do not know what else to try, or what I am doing wrong.
Please, can anybody help me? I am clueless.
Thanks everybody and regards.

Search buttons are very touch to use, so here is an example query
search.php?keywords=master+mode&terms=all&author=&sc=1&sf=all&sk=t&sd=d&sr=posts&st=0&ch=300&t=0&submit=Search

?If I am posting in this forum, it's because I had read all the documentation in the forum about this issue before.

As I have said, I have tried whit 2.6.26 kernel patch as it sais in viewtopic.php?f=5&t=4963, and I have try whit the main branch of the kernel sheltered in the repository GIT. But I couldn't enable the master mode anyway.

I just want to know if I am doing somethig wrong (In that case I will be gratefull for some help) or the problem is that this especifically card (Conceptronic 54g Wireless PCI Card with a Ralink RT2561/RT61) don't support master mode. Honestly I didn't spect a simple "RTFM" as reply of my post.

I have also tried to make an ad-hoc net between that card and a MacBook Pro (whit macosx tiger). In this case, the card switchs fine to the ad-hoc mode but there is no comunication between both computers. Everything is allright, same channel, IP's... and the link is engaged, but a simple ping doesn't work.

I supose that the developement of this driver is still and the better option for my is forsake this card and buy another one with a good support.
I know that my Prism 2.5 is slowly and old fashioned, but it work perfectly in master mode and whit Hostpad. Maybe I will try to find another one.

Thanks everybody and regards.

Then you would be one of the few.

Did you actually follow the link I provided? There are MULTIPLE howtos on how to activate master mode, and in particular there are MANY that explain why "iwconfig wlan0 mode master" doesn't work. There are plenty of hostapd configuration examples available, both on this forum and elsewhere.

[sarcasm]Well if using hostapd with rt2x00 is too hard, then obviously it will be so much easier to use hostapd with prism.[/sarcasm]
