I'm trying to use my Eee Box as an access point, the ralink driver (rt2860sta) does not support "master" mode so I've directed my attention towards this project.

My kernel is the latest (as of a few hours ago at least) version from the rt2x00 git repo. I've copied the 2860.bin to /lib/firmware.

I can modprobe 2800pci and then run ifconfig -a to see that wlan0 and wmaster0 have shown up.

When I run
[code2vvev7gk]iwconfig wlan0 mode master[/code2vvev7gk]
I get
[code2vvev7gk]Error for wireless request "Set Mode" (8B06) :
invalid argument "scan".
[/code2vvev7gk]

Also, when I run iwconfig wlan0 mode ad-hoc and then ifconfig wlan0 up, my entire computer freezes.

So I guess my question is, is master mode supported? If so what am I doing wrong? I'm using Gentoo if that's any relevance.

Thanks.

Well for one Use the search button about the "iwconfig wlan0 mode master" issue.
Secondly Use the search button to see the rt2800pci status thread
