Hello, I am a bit desperate trying to set an AP with RT61 (Edimax EW-7128G). I tried to read and follow as much documentation I was able to find but without success. My system is Gentoo amd64.

It does not matter if I use rt2x00 driver from kernel, downloaded legacy driver from serialmonkey together with patched gentoo 2.6.28 kernel or custom git kernel from serialmonkey with new-generation rt2x00 drivers built-in plus git hostapd. Every time I end up with something like that
STA 001644696254 sent probe request for broadcast SSID
MGMT (TX callback) ACK
mgmtproberesp cb
STA 001644696254 sent probe request for broadcast SSID
MGMT (TX callback) ACK
mgmtproberesp cb
STA 001644696254 sent probe request for broadcast SSID
MGMT (TX callback) fail
mgmtproberesp cb
STA 001644696254 sent probe request for broadcast SSID
MGMT (TX callback) ACK
mgmtproberesp cb
STA 001644696254 sent probe request for broadcast SSID
MGMT (TX callback) fail
mgmtproberesp cb

Sometimes I got message like this
unknown vendor specific information element ignored (vendor OUI 001018 len=9)

No SSID is visible on my clients and even if I configure my client device to connect to hidden SSID it does not help and I am getting no more communication logs than I posted above.

Because I got the git.kernel and git.hostapd I expected I will get it working but unfortunatelly I haven't. I also expected master mode (iwconfig wlan0 mode master) will work with new-generation drivers but it won't
Error for wireless request "Set Mode" (8B06)
SET failed on device wlan0 ; Invalid argument.

Because documentation seems to be outdated and I think I made all I have to, I am asking for help here. I appreciate any comment helping me to move forward.

BTW I, like many other people, miss one simple HOWTO covering all necessary steps to get event simpliest (no encryption, accept all rules etd.) AP working. It means getting kernel and configuring key options, wlan0 settings, getting hostapd and configuring it to work properly. Current state with several incomplete HOWTOs (containing howtos, missing neccessary steps and prerequisites etc.) is really bad.
