Dear all,

I am trying to use a WiFi USB dongle as software access point and I have some problems to set the dongle in master mode.

The USB dongle is based on the RaLink RT2870 chip and it is used with the rt2800usb driver from the compat-wireless package. I have read on other threads on this forum that this driver should support the ‘master’ mode for this chip.

The driver has successfully been compiled (from the compat-wireless-2.6.36-5-spn version) on Ubuntu 10.10 and is correctly loaded on the dongle.

[quote1ieuhmos]Output from nm-tool

Device wlan0 [Auto xxxx_demo] ----------------------------------------------
Type 802.11 WiFi
Driver rt2800usb
State connected
Default no
HW Address 000E8E28052B[/quote1ieuhmos]

I am able to connect as client to neighboring WiFi access points without any problem. However, I get an error message when trying to set the dongle in ‘master’ mode. It seems that this mode is not supported by the driver.

[quote1ieuhmos]$ sudo iwconfig wlan0 mode master
Error for wireless request "Set Mode" (8B06)
SET failed on device wlan0 ; Invalid argument.[/quote1ieuhmos]

So, here are my questions
1. Has anyone succeeded in using a RT2870 chip with the rt2800usb driver in ‘master’ mode (or with another driver)?
2. Does the rt2800usb driver require some ‘customization’ in order to be used in master mode?
3. Does the rt2800usb driver support the ‘master’/AP mode?
4. Is it possible to use the RT2870 chip with Hostapd ?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Yes. Just use the search button on this forum to read various articles from people who use it.

2. Does the rt2800usb driver require some ‘customization’ in order to be used in master mode?
[/quote2r6qxptc]

Nope.

3. Does the rt2800usb driver support the ‘master’/AP mode?
[/quote2r6qxptc]

Yes.

4. Is it possible to use the RT2870 chip with Hostapd ?

Yes, but in your post you are not even trying to use hostapd... Instead you are trying to use 'iwconfig' which can't do master mode. In fact if you just googled on your error message, you would find a lot of forum posts regarding people who got the exact same error, because they didn't use hostapd.

Thank you for your answer.

Indeed, using hostapd solved the problem. I 'missed' some part in the hostapd documentation

[quote1pfst25a]... , the old method of issuing 'iwconfig <wireless interface> mode master' no longer works. Userspace programs like hostapd now use netlink (the nl80211 driver) to create a master mode interface ...[/quote1pfst25a]
