In my Atom-based NAS, running Debian squeeze and kernel 2.6.32-5-686 (32bit), I have a Linksys WMP54g with a Ralink rt61 chipset. This connects a n-capable wifi router secured with simple WPA (but wpa2 gives me the same problems). The router is about 5m away from the box.
The problem is that the connection is so slow and jittery that it is even barely useable for an ssh session. Transfer speeds over samba are in the order 100-300kbits/s, typing in ssh is sluggish and characters are sometimes delayed. On my Windows workstation however, the wireless connection to the router is fine.
I've also noticed that the iwconfig-reported speed stedaily drops after connection has been established (54-48-36... until finally 1mbps). Setting the rate manually results in a connection drop (but iwconfig still reports connected). Putting it back on auto restores connectivity.
I found a similiar description of a problem here https//bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=70094
What to do? I'm resorting back to a wired connection atm...

I have now tried with an rt73usb adapter (Belkin stick) and speeds are marginally better (700kB to 1MB/s)...
