Hi,
I'm new into this forum. I have a WiFi DWL-G122 VerE1 USB dongle based on Ralink RT2870 chipset.
On my linux distro (on VMWare) this device has rt2800usb driver.
I can do everything with this driver, but when i'm trying to change modulation with the following
iwconfig mon0 modulation 11g (or 11b or auto)
the follwing error cames up
Error for wireless request
"Set Modulation" (8B2F)
set failed on device mon0;
operation not supported

Another kind of error (no private ioctls) is experienced when trying to set mode with iwpriv command.

Is root cause in the rt2800usb drivers? or in the firmware?

Thanks in advance,
Frubiot

Neither, where in the manpage of iwconfig did it say that 'modulation' can be changed using iwconfig?
You are simply using a command which the tool you are using is not capable of.

Hi,
thanks for reply.

Really in the man iwconfig page there is command "modu" (see at the bottom).

I explored iwconfig capabilities for change modulation given that iwpriv is not supported/working
>iwpriv mon0 mode 2
mon0 no private ioctls.

So my point is is it possible to change modulation using usb wifi dongle (DWL-G122 VerE1) with rt2800usb? Is it up to driver or firmware?

********From iwconfig man page******
modu[lation]
Force the card to use a specific set of modulations. Modern
cards support various modulations, some which are standard, such
as 802.11b or 802.11g, and some proprietary. This command force
the card to only use the specific set of modulations listed on
the command line. This can be used to fix interoperability
issues.
The list of available modulations depend on the card/driver and
can be displayed using iwlist modulation. Note that some
card/driver may not be able to select each modulation listed
independently, some may come as a group. You may also set this
parameter to auto let the card/driver do its best.
Examples
iwconfig eth0 modu 11g
iwconfig eth0 modu CCK OFDMa
iwconfig eth0 modu auto

Hmm, that command seems to be new. )

The driver supports it (as long as mac80211 supports it).
What does "iwlist mon0 modulation" return?

Hi IvD,
following your suggestion here is iwlist mon0 modulation command result (tried with mon0 wireless interface down as well, but nothing changed)

> iwlist mon0 modulation
mon0 unknown modulation information.
