Hi,

Ok, this is continuation of this post[/urls0ykwnr9], but as it includes RtUtil now I will continue here.

I installed RtUtil together with the latest version of the legacy driver rt2500, both following the instructions in [url=https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WifiDocs/Driver/RalinkRT2500s0ykwnr9]this guide[/urls0ykwnr9].

Everything compiled fine and looks ok, but RtUtil just doensn't connect to my router. In RtUtil I made a new profile, added my Router SSID that is also properly scanned, entered my wpa key (tried both hex and ascii, as it is not clear what the util expects ascii key selection is greyed out). If I press apply, the Shell shows this information

[codes0ykwnr9]

Furthermore, in the util I see that quite some bytes and Packets are transmitted, but none are received. Furthermore it claims "10 errors".

Anyone knows what to do?

Hello,
How did you choose hex or ascii since the box is greyed out? This is done purposely because WPAPSK keys are always ascii. Did you ever manage to connect to your AP using WPA and "iwpriv" to configure your card?

Romain

I just tried to fill in ascii key and the hex key (textually) in the keybox and connected. Both attempts didn't work out.

And no, I never managed to connect my AP using WPA and "iwpriv". Previously installed WinXP did work, and last week also on Ubuntu Feisty ndiswrapper kind of worked, but now I did a clean install of Kubuntu Feisty. I tried all the possible configuration listed here[/url2brker2o], But the all didn't work.

Now I uninstalled the KDE network manager and restarted the computer. I again started RutilT and try to connect.
No I get the following error message

Critical error
Can't read in socket.
Code 4

En then the application exits.
Can someone please help me, or should I just try ndiswrapper?

This issue has been resolved, please download RutilT latest CVS version in that thread [url1ea7rnjj]http://rt2x00.serialmonkey.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=295&start=270[/url1ea7rnjj] (it's in one of my post at page 19 top).
If configuring the interface with "iwpriv" failed, then it's likely that RutilT fails too.
Which version of the driver are you using? What is exactly the encryption scheme of your network? Is there any 802.X authentication used?

keespost

I downloaded rt2500-cvs-daily.tar.gz and built and installed it following this guide[/url3jroscg5]. I use WPA1, nothing strange really, no 802.X authentication. And I just don't seem to get it to work with these regular drivers. (

What is exactly the encryption scheme of your network? Is there any 802.X authentication used? Does your network appear in scan results?

Yes, it does appear in scan results.

After googling a bit and reading some forums I found out that my building and installing a new driver didn't work out correctly after all.

The guides says
[quotexq953d0e]
3. The module is now built. Before we install it, let's test it. Type
sudo insmod rt2500.ko
[/quotexq953d0e]
But it didn't tell me what to expext as an output. I got
[quotexq953d0e]
insmod error inserting 'rt2500.ko' -1 File exists
[/quotexq953d0e]
Of which I wasn't sure if this was correct or not. I now think it was not, because if I type "modinfo rt2500", I get
[quotexq953d0e]
kpost@home~/rt2500/Module$ modinfo rt2500

which seems to be an old version, right (at least it seems to not work fine for me)? So, how do I uninstall the current driver, so that I can install the new one (yes, I'm a newbie and I guess it is a typical newbie question wink)?

Spy84464

06-05-2007 12:47:08

Yes, that indeed a very old version. First, bring the interface down "ifconfig ra0 down", remove the module "modprobe -r rt2500", then download the very latest CVS version (rt2500 has been patched a lot lately), compile it ("make"), and install it ("make install"). It *should* override the old module, insert it ("modprobe rt2500") and check with "modinfog rt2500" if it's really the new one. Then bring the interface up ("ifconfig ra0 up"), launch RutilT and try to connect to your network.

Finally I have my wireless up and running!! D
Thanks for the suggestions!!

Unfortunately I still wasn't able to connect via RutilT. For some reason the scan found my AP having WEP protection, while it really is WAP. Also pre-configuring a profile didn't work and ended up in not getting a DHCP offer.

However, the latest legacy rt2500 driver, together with the following lines in /etc/network/interfaces did the trick

[quotemckq7qn0]
auto ra0
iface ra0 inet dhcp
pre-up iwconfig ra0 essid "SX551C0079A"
pre-up iwconfig ra0 mode managed
pre-up iwpriv ra0 set Channel=11
pre-up iwpriv ra0 set AuthMode=WPAPSK
pre-up iwpriv ra0 set EncrypType=TKIP
pre-up iwpriv ra0 set WPAPSK="345d11234c70c8909932343c21e90a58a70c9e7f6ad20d6fb5f890495f8e540d"
pre-up iwpriv ra0 set TxRate=0
[/quotemckq7qn0]
*I altered my WPAPSK hex-key wink

If you would appreciate for me to gather some information from the RutilT tool, just let me know. Would be happy to help.

Spy84464

06-05-2007 16:18:57

Good. I'll post a debugging version of RutilT soon, thanks for the help. By the way, what is that "iwpriv ra0 set TxRate=0", did someone suggested it?

keespost

06-05-2007 21:20:02

It was litterally the last recommended stanza recommended in the Ubuntu guide here[/url14u15ttm].

I have no idea why that worked and the first alternative didn't. I guess it must either have to do with the Channel option or with the TxRate option.

Ok, can you try the version I posted in that thread [url30gu6doe]http://rt2x00.serialmonkey.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=22467#22467[/url30gu6doe] please? It will generate a debugging trace. There's nothing special to do, debug is enabled by default.

Sorry for the late response, I don't have a lot of time for my home-computer during the week-days. wink

I tested the debugging version. Starting it up worked fine.It detects the current connection and doesn't brake it or anything. The console outputs all parameters, which seem to be sound. However, if I try to connect to a profile that I defined in rutilt, it crashes with

[quote2b8pqc0m]

Error.
Can't read in socket.
Code 4

Spy84464

This error is back? I fixed it some time ago. Can you try again with the version I posted here [url2zqtgxuy]http://rt2x00.serialmonkey.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=3748[/url2zqtgxuy] (close to the bottom of the page). If it still occurs, tell me which option you used with "configure.sh" (if any) and make sure you run "make install" to overwrite all previous old binaries.

Edit I got another report of this error (using the version I suggest). I'm going to dig in that part of the code again.

howdy

I have the same problem that was posted by keespost, worst, every time I use RutilT my wireless radio is disable, and i must reebot \ (I use Wlan manager to connect into my wireless (without WPA)). with RuitlT I can't even connect to wireless without protection \.

Conclusion knetworkmanager stalls at 28%
Wlan manager works very fine, but doens't support WPA
RutilT doesn't work at all, and after trying to connect by it, it disables my card radio antena \

after reboot a new error! now it says that there isn't a active network, but if I run wlan manager, before running rutilt, no error appear (except the Can't get access point Mac address. 107 one) I'm at college, have 2 wireless connections avaivable, one with wpa that never worked with linux, and one with no security at all, just to register as student (certificates and that stuff) and none of them work with rutilt

Spy84464

05-06-2007 10:50:11

What kind of authentication is the WPA network using? You cannot connect to the second network because the legacy drivers don't support wpa_supplicant, which is required when certificates have to be used, so RutilT won't be helpful either in that case.

Starcrasher

05-06-2007 20:20:36

idea I just saw in rt73 cvs-driver's readme that there is patch for wpa_supplicant to make it work. Maybe it can be adapt to rt2500 ?
more info [url21kpgpps]http://mjh.name/Ralink_rt73_wpa_supplicant_rt2x00_wpa2[/url21kpgpps]

Yes, this patch also exists for rt61. It could certainly be ported to rt2500, but most development effort are going toward rt2x00, which already support wpa_supplicant out of the box.

I have a similar problem with my linksys WMP54G version 4.1 european and rt61 driver(lspci 000d.0 Network controller RaLink RT2561/RT61 802.11g PCI)

with rutilt I get Request 8b15 Can't get access point Mac address. But iwlist wlan0 scanning get it.

without rutilt I get nothing, dhcpcd go in timeout

Yesterday, have worked for a little time, but in "clear" mode without any encryption. After I have tryed to use wpa2 with aes, wep and with standard kernel module for wep, wpa, ecc
the association with access point. I have tryed to reboot, I have tryed with drivers for ralink site and more, but nothing ( With my notebook, with the same os, Slackware 12 but 32 bit, and intel wireless integrated card, all work ok with original drivers downloaded from http//ipw3945.sourceforge.net/. The problem is on that board(linksys). Apparently all is ok, but not work. The card go up and down, work if I use it peer to peer desktop->notebook in "clear" mode with static ip addresses, but not work with my access point; it is a THOMSON ST585.
My desktop with linksys wmp54g is a dual core X86_64 opteron, my kernel, on both desktop and notebook, is vanilla 2.16.23.12 and the distro is Slamd64 on the desktop, Slackware 12 32bit on notebook.

For now I go in the bed ) I are exhausted.

I have used the command as from your README included in cvs tarball, iwconfig, ifconfig and iwpriv. I have not used wpa_supplicant. And I have used rt61sta.dat, in binary mode, when I tryed the ralink drivers.

Excuse me for my bad English
