Are you sure you enabled all dependencies?
For example, do you see the "Ralink driver support"
under the "Device Drivers" -> "Network device support" -> "Wireless LAN"

Yes, when pulling rt2x00.git you will have a very recent kernel, it can sometimes lag
1 or 2 rc released behind the vanilla kernel, but that is usually not a problem.
