Well, you're going to have to manage some protocol changes.  By default,
the USB utilizes the Media Transfer Protocol for storage media and may not
even begin to support other devices.  So, of course, you'll be rooting and
adding new drivers.  You'll need to be careful if you're installing your
new OS on the flash since it has a maximum size supported.  You MIGHT be
able to compress the kernel and such for better capacity, but that's
something else entirely.
It seems you already have the source, start with it and see what's offered
in the drivers and what you can enable.  That's all I can offer personally
since I don't own any Android devices.  But hopefully someone else will
give you a good boost in the right direction.
